A troika, a three-horse drawn sledge

Troika Horse Race on Frozen Yenisey River – Siberia’s Annual Ice Derby Tradition

On March 14, 2009, the vast frozen expanse of the Yenisey River echoed with the rhythmic thunder of hooves. A troika—a traditional three-horse sleigh—raced across the glittering ice, its bells chiming in harmony with the pulse of Siberia’s winter heart. The driver, wrapped in furs, leaned forward against the cold wind as the horses surged ahead, their breath rising like silver mist into the pale sky. This scene unfolded near Novosyolovo, 250 kilometers south of Krasnoyarsk, during the annual Ice Derby, a beloved tradition held since 1969. Year after year, it gathers riders and spectators from across the region, celebrating endurance, heritage, and the unbroken bond between human courage and equine strength in Russia’s frozen heartland.

🌌 Reflection

There’s something timeless about that moment on the ice—a meeting of past and present, motion and silence. The troika doesn’t just race; it carries the echo of generations that once depended on its speed and grace. The frozen river becomes more than a path—it’s a stage where memory gallops alongside the living. Watching it, one feels the pulse of winter’s beauty and the warmth of tradition enduring against the cold. It reminds us that even in the harshest landscapes, the spirit of connection—between human, animal, and land—can create something breathtakingly alive. ❄️🐎
